Deep Thoughts...

This is like as not to be a fairly long winded post so keep that in mind as you begin reading. That and I will likely cover this on the next podcast but your looking at a couple weeks before that gets recorded and released.

Taking stock of my fantasy gaming career is a simple matter. I've been alive for 33 years now and for at least 19 of that I've been playing tabletop miniatures games. Thats a lot. Now, I don't claim to be a game designer or the best strategist, no, none of that would be accurate at all. I however feel that I have played enough games to be able to pin down whether a game will be successful over a long haul. Sadly, I believe AoS is not going to be that game. I don't think it will die off, nor do I believe that you'll never see a tournament for it. I do however believe that they will be fewer and farther between than WHFB tournaments were and I don't think you'll be finding them around my area.

The scene here started pretty swiftly with the AoS release. Many players from Warmachine, Hordes and especially Warhammer 40,000 were willing to make the jump and give it a try. I'd say locally in the first month we had probably in the ballpark of twenty players giving it a go. Our area has never been a big WHFB area and so to get more than ten was pretty great and for the month of July things seemed pretty hot. However, there has been a curtail as of recent. The last week of July and the first couple weeks of August have seen a significant drop in activity and by significant I mean I've only seen 5 people playing and that's counting myself among them.

The more I play(ed) AoS the more I became disenchanted. At first I liked many of the new rules that the Warscrolls offered. I really gave myself a kick in the pants to get excited about it. Started basing up a VC army on rounds and ovals. Recorded a full length rules podcast and continued to play it. I'm currently sitting just shy of twenty games played. However the game has started to slide already. Every game has tended to end in a giant scrum of combat or getting pelted off tables by gunlines. Games rarely see a win through anything other than tabling your opponent and people quickly realized there is no point to not running the most elite things you can. Why take a model that has 1 attack and causes 1 wound when you can take the models that have 2 or 3 attacks and cause equal wounds. I really wanted to try to champion this product in our area to try and build the community but it appears that may be impossible.

The game has some positive points, however I feel that the negatives outweigh them rather heavilly. You can make the game fun but it requires an awful lot of house ruling and if I wanted to really create my own miniature game I would. Sorry GW, your losing me here. My Twitter feed is full of Infinity and Kings of War with only the folks from across the pond still posting AoS things. Its getting hard to stay positive. I wont abandon the game yet but I wont deny that it doesn't look good for it in our area, that's for sure.

This all brings us around to Mantic Games. Now, as I said WHFB was never big in our area so I certainly don't expect Mantic or Kings of War to take off. Especially when you consider that the gamestore who is areas primary miniature gaming center pushes Hordes, War Machine and Warhammer 40,000. However, that all said there are people in our state who are picking up Kings of War and my local group of friends have recently started playing it. We started a while back playing Wild West Exodus and while I don't see that going anywhere either I think that Kings of War will likely be our replacement for WHFB and AoS. The game is trimmer than WHFB ever was, easier, more clearly written and still pretty fun.

Now, keep in mind I've only played three games of Kings of War and using three different armies so I haven't nailed down solid tactics yet for anything special but I wanted to discuss those first three games. I played my Dwarfs who got just destroyed in 4 turns. That game led me to a couple of conclusions. This game is not big on shooting unless you really SPAM it heavily, and movement is very, VERY important. The player with the higher movement value basically dictates the game and where the charges will occur at. This is actually a bit frustrating because it causes a number of standoffs which can make the game very un-fun and makes me miss the random charge distance of WHFB 8th Ed. When they introduced the random charge distance it gave slow moving armies a risk vs reward option. Yes the enemy would often stay at the far end of our possible charge distance to ensure they would get the charge on their turn but then for their opponents that long charge was a better option than no option. Kings of War leaves me with the no option feeling.

I then played my second game with the new Beta Ratkin list using my Skaven army. It was pretty good and I felt quite entertained. They retained some of their Skaven type feel transferring to Kings of War and Mantic made basically every unit in their list a direct pull over from WHFB. Thats not to say they are exactly the same. In fact they are vastly different but they still have the same kind of feel which is nice. The game was against Ogres again but this time with the Scenario we played and a good mix of units with decent movement and power I never felt out of the game. With the Scenario I still lost but if you take the scenario out of it the Ogres were only about 175 points ahead.

My third game played was with the Kingdoms of Men, who performed quite well. The game was against some Elves and resulted in a draw with the scenario we played but with the humans up by about 300 points. Some of the pieces again felt useless due to being put up against things that were faster and stronger but overall I never felt like the game was lopsided or bad. My War Machines did wounds and things went well most of the game. Dice were rolled, loud and boisterous statements were made and it felt like something I could bite into. This time based on the Scenario we ended in a draw but with the humans ahead by about 100 points. Again my opponent and I both felt that it was a really good game and walked away quite pleased with it.

I think that the one thing I have to keep in mind here is that KoW is not WHFB, but then again, neither is AoS. If your on the fence one way or the other I highly recommend trying both, but there is very little doubt in my mind that KoW is a more complex, interesting and in the end, fun game than AoS is currently. Now depending on what GW does, they can fix AoS. They can give it structure and scenarios and some kind of balancing mechanism but lacking those and so many other things I feel that it may very soon be a dead or dying system, at least on Illinois. Of course; its all just opinion and I could be very wrong.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-35636682979522038192015-07-30T21:10:00.000-05:002015-07-30T21:10:44.875-05:00Episode #83: Age of Sigmar Rules

Hello everybody!

Thanks for joining us again for Episode #83. I'm joined in this episode by friend of the show Chuck to finally sit down and talk more in depth about Warhammer: Age of Sigmar! I must say its really nice to sit down for a full length show with an old friend and discuss the new game. Chuck and I break into this show going through the 4 pager of rules and giving our thoughts and opinions on it as we go over those rules talking about how to play the game.

We wrap up the show discussing what we've done lately and kind of where we are at personally in the hobby right now. We also mention the future of the show which we're not 100% on the direction of at this moment but I can certainly assure you we'll be working diligently on continuing everything as it is to the end of 2015 at which point I think we'll have had more than enough time to decide on exactly what the future of the hobby will be for ourselves and consequently the show itself.

Thanks for joining us and as always if you have any questions, comments, etc... please let us know by e-mailing us at: waaagh.cast.jf@gmail.com
Hello everybody,

Episode
#82 is not only here, it is short. I basically just wanted to get something out after a two month hiatus and get some talk in about Age of Sigmar and where I stand on the hobby at the moment. To me it isn't dead and I'm actually hoping this will reinvigorate me into my podcasting. So its only abot 25 minutes that I recorded on my lunch at work today, listen to it and I hope maybe you get something from it. I used my mobile recorder for this episode too, so the quality is kind of rough. Sorry about that ahead of time.

We hope you enjoy the show, and if you have any
comments, questions, etc please feel free to e-mail us and leave
comments on the blog or i-Tunes! Thanks for listening.
I mean, I know that the WHFB world technically ended when the last End Times book came out but wow does it seem like it has ended now. Yet, reborn it is as “The Age of SIgmar” heralds in a new era of peace and prosperity. Well, not really… Wow was the internet a crazy thing to check out over the last two weeks as not only more and more rumors, pictures and theories flooded but as the rules were eventually released. The amount of blind hate spewed from people who play and love Warhammer was unreal. It literally hurt me a little inside seeing the community fracture like it has which is really quite unfortunate as that will probably be the worst thing to come out of Age of Sigmar while some would argue that the worst thing is Age of Sigmar itself.

I’ve now played two games of Age of Sigmar (AoS) and while I have begun to form many opinions, each time I play something a changes a little bit. Here and there I see pieces of strategy and planning come into it. Then it will do a 180 on me and I’ll simply be left wondering what on earth GW was thinking. I get the need for a reset, I really do. WHFB was a flagging game system. It wasn’t pulling its weight and that has a lot to do with many customers including myself. Many of us who have been in the hobby for years own so many armies that we don’t buy a lot of new stuff. Those of us who do keep building armies tend to go and find it second hand, often as not. Personally I do a little of both new and used. When kids (I know people are railing against this whole kid’s thing right now) come into the store they see WHFB and 40K and think they both look amazing. The whole barrier to entry through money thing exists in both systems although I do agree that 40K is probably slightly less. Something had to be done to get people to walk in, see this and say “I must play that!”. Now whether Age of Sigmar achieves this goal or not will remain to be seen but GW has gone a long way towards giving it the college try.

Kids can now walk into a game store, the store employee can say, “Oh, you like the look of that box? Get a box, a hobby knife, some glue and I’ll print out these 100% free rules for you from their website and you can play right now!”. Sounds a lot better than “Oh, you like the look of that box? Well, you’ll have to get that, this book, that book, about 20/30 more boxes, glue, knife and then read the 200 page rulebook (probably twice) before you can really get to it.”. Woof… I mean the barrier to entry for AoS is now actually less than 40K and that is for sure saying something. GW appears to be ready to push this system and hard at that for which I applaud them. They did their best to bring the old guard from WHFB along by giving us all of our rules for our older existing armies from day 1 and if those that don’t want to make the transition go away I’m 100% certain it doesn’t bother GW in the least. Frankly they may be better off for it at that. The old guard appears at least to me to be the ones burning the internet down over the last couple of weeks. People who’ve not even tried the game are exploding over broken or unstructured rules, silly in game effects and the utter lack of clarification by GW. I am at least willing to give it a college try before bashing the dog snot out of it, so let’s get to my opinions on the game as it stands.

Remember, this opinion is formed from only having played two games. I plan on playing at least five before I really make my decision on whether I will continue to play AoS in the future or not. GW released the rules for all these armies and I was like a kid at Christmas, excitedly reading all my rules. I thought the tongue in cheek humor of talking to models and grumbling like a Dwarf were funny and a nice tip of the hat to the old fluff. I didn’t view them as childish or ignorant. In fact (and I don’t take credit for this statement because someone else on a forum said it first but I agreed) I already to all that crazy stuff during a game of Warhammer anyway! I always talk to my models, belittle my dice and make crazy noises; it’s part of the fun! One of the biggest issues is we still don’t have an army building comp to work with and so my first game was run very simply. We chose to use formations from the back of the army rules up to 60 wounds. I fielded a small army of Dwarf units, nothing larger than 10 models, no war machines and obviously no magic. My friend ran a Minotaur Herd with a Gorbull, three units of Minotaurs and one of the big giant guys (I can’t remember what he was). The game wasn’t so much a game as it was a 30 minute testament to me not rage-quitting. Multi wound, multi attack, multi damaging models are insanely good and he trounced all of my models off the table while I removed only two of his. From there, my opinion immediately shifted to all of my armies being useless as infantry are terrible. This was fueled partly by the fact that there is no army structure and there is no reason not to field only the best models in an army that can do things like the Minotaur’s did.

That game was pretty early after the rules released; in fact, the day after. I’d read them but there were plenty of little pieces that were missed and we didn’t give the armies much thought other than adhering to the formation at the back of the PDF. We played diametrically opposed army lists which were just begging for me to be on the losing end. This was no fault of either of ours. I looked at the armies I had and made something, while my friend looked at his and did too. Turns out a formation of Minotaurs is just better than a formation of minimum sized Dwarfs without war machines. I talked myself off the ledge by realizing that if I’d had machines that did multiple wounds I could’ve probably been ok and had a chance by removing models before he got to me. Plus each day as I continued to read I found more things that were there to help infantry survived. Standards and Battle Standards for many armies give a radius of effect that let you ignore wounds or ignore Battleshock or at least have a chance of not leaving the table from Battleshock which is about the same as ignoring wounds. I refreshed and opened my eyes a little wider.

The next game would be three days later when I would field my Skaven against my other friends Ogre Kingdoms. We decided to use the most popular comp idea running around right now which was 100 wounds and restrictions on how many heroes and monsters you could take as well as an overall limit to the number of units. Having knowledge gained from last game I made sure to bring some machines as well as a BSB. Skaven happen to have a lot of weapons that conduct “mortal wounds” which is to say a wound with no regular save unless your rule specifies it saves against this type of wound. I think it blew my friend back for a second when the machines started hitting and he was removing Ogres. Then however the combat started and wow. Turns out infantry, when used correctly with the right synergies of buffs and characters helping out can be awfully deadly. The game ground on as we took unit after unit off, a combat not usually going more than a single round. The one exception was my Stormvermin who ended up in a large multiple combat after killing a Giant. They found themselves fighting a Tyrant, a unit of Leadbelchers and Ironguts. Because of the BSB and General nearby letting them ignore Battleshock they held long enough for me to bring the Plague Monks over to assist. By the time the game was over I’d tabled the Ogres but had myself lost 43 of 54 models which to me really speaks of a close game. Afterwards since both of my friends I’d played were present we sat and discussed many things about the game that we did and did not like.
I suppose we’ll start with what I found appealing. The gameplay is faster, no doubt about that. It’s still a game and the fact is I enjoy gaming. Other than my average Skaven list my Dwarfs and Empire lists will on average fit into the current composition that is being used by many on limiting wounds and scrolls. I can see the shiny parts. I can see that there is some strategy in the game and as people start to pick up on it the games will get more serious and probably scenarios will go a long way towards increasing that as well. Things I don’t like. Models die so damned fast. Sure, things have many more wounds now than they used to. Ogres have 4 wounds, most monsters range between 8-14 but my god once we hit combat the Abomination and the Giant went down in a single round of combat never getting a chance to swing back. Magic seems completely forgettable because you only have a couple of spells, unless of course you’re playing a list that can summon which brings up the fact that oh my god why!? I can summon on 2 dice units, monsters and characters. Not to mention if I’m not a dingbat and I keep my caster far enough from yours you can’t even try to stop me?! People said the game is unbalanced because of no list building restrictions and this just takes it too far in my opinion. Measuring model to model leaves way too much open to be taken advantage of as far as modeling for advantage.

So all of that said I don’t mind the game. The internet is on fire because people say how there’s no semblance of balance or it’s so easy to build broken and over powerful lists. Yes, yes it is. If you try to break this game I can guarantee that you will. The game is too open to fail at that attempt. GW left the game up to us, the gamers to decide what to do with it. They’ve been saying for ages that they don’t’ make the game to be a competitive tournament game and boy did they embrace that full force. While it would certainly be nice to have some more information about how to try and build a balanced army its really up to you and your opponent to decide before each game. Nobody is going to cry about a game if they come into it knowing that they playing silly lists or strong lists or fluffy lists. Just discuss it before hand and you should all be fine. As for those of you who are complaining without trying. Stop being so butt hurt about it. If you hate it and want to play a different game, go for it. Stop complaining; take your toys and go. Nobody minds, honestly.

----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-78420559846026150672015-06-30T20:04:00.001-05:002015-06-30T20:04:09.348-05:00Age of Sigmar : Death of Warhammer

Welcome to the Age of Sigmar...

Or so it is told. Here I am on June 30th writing this post looking at the pictures, rules and warscrolls (I.E. Army Book) of the new starter set. As told currently Warhammer Fantasy Battles is dead. The books have all been pulled and are no longer for sale. White Dwarf is touting this new game as an entirely new system and for the most part it is indeed quite new. It seems to me that it is pulling mechanics from damned near every current game system out there. We've got skirmishing models, simplified rules, rules in box with models, on-line .pdf's containing rules which can be updated when desired. Sure we've still got plenty of what were used to with GW as well. That is to say amazing models, poor customer communication and an utter lack of answers to any of our questions.

Many of the questions fall back at this point to, how do we construct armies? According to everything we've heard thus far from GW the rules are "Take whatever, however you want." Now I know that GW doesn't consider themselves a company that designs a game for tournament or competitive play, but this just makes no sense. People are raging over it and the inability to understand exactly what GW's plan is for this game. I am of the opinion that everything we have seen so far is just the contents of the "Starter Set" and that we will see more things coming in the near future. A larger more filled out rule book. Army books that will add additional rules and intricacies to the game, etc... I'm using book here interchangeably with .pdf as GW has also stated that as of July 4th not only will the core rules be available as a free .pdf on their website but so will updated warscrolls for all of the currently existing armies.

Today the 4 page rules were leaked from the next issue of White Dwarf. The rules are awfully simplified but I can see where the strategy will begin to develop. I've played 40K in the past and I understand how important it is to do certain things. I think that currently one of the biggest changes was the removal of all of the number charts. No longer do you compare WS, T, S, I, etc... Now each warscroll for models will contain a statline that simply says the weapon, the number required to hit the enemy, number required to wound and how much of a penalty the weapon gives the opponent to their armor save. Wow! Now that's a change.

I've spent a lot of time in retrospective thought. I have roughly between $10-15,000 wrapped up into the Warhammer system when you look at armies, books, tables, terrain, bags, etc... That's a lot of damned money over the last too many years. Too much for me to just quit, that's for sure. When the rumors first came out I said to most people I discussed them with that I hoped for a new Ravening Hordes. For those who don't know, back between 5th-6th edition GW published a get you by document and discontinued all of the army books. This was probably the most balanced the game had ever been as each new book tends to creep up in power. Honestly, having looked at the rules now I think I may have inadvertantly gotten my wish. The fact that all the books are discontinued to be re-released as .pdf's on the website in the next 4 days means the game may actually be balanced.

I still believe that soon we'll probably see more releases. Maybe a larger rule book with all of the special and intricate things in it. However, maybe not. If this is where Age of Sigmar hits and stays then it will all come down to the rules being released for the armies. If the game is too simple without enough tactical variation then it will like die a very quick death. I'm going to do something rare here and be the optimist. I can't wait for the rules to come out and get a game in as soon as I possibly can. I'm hoping it's great but only time will tell. So for those of you raging out there; stop! Give it time and give it a fair shake. you may be surprised at your decisions afterwards.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-49209635809122659692015-06-30T19:41:00.002-05:002015-06-30T19:42:01.957-05:00The Waaagh Cast Quarterly: Issue #3

Hi everybody!

We're here with Issue #3 of The Waaagh Cast Quarterly! I'm thrilled to have managed to get 3 of these magazines put together and with the help of friends perhaps we'll do more. Truth be told, we only have at this moment the slightest idea of where Warhammer is heading or where it will end up when the Age of Sigmar launches in just 10 days. Hopefully we'll all still be playing but good gracious, the lord only knows.

In this issue you get to see some Dwarfs, hear about some Empire VS. Warriors of Chaos, learn a bit about Blood in the Snow and find out how to make flowering trees. Along with anything else that you may find of interest and we hope you do; please enjoy the 3rd quarters issue. Hopefully we'll be back in Q4!

Hello everybody,

Episode #81 is up and running where friend of the show Dave and I discuss our current state of malaise on the WHFB game that not only ourselves but many others are currently feeling and then have a discussion on Wild West Exodus as our new hobby hotness. So if your interested in a new game and the Wild West sounds good give it a listen. We had some recording issues during the show, some background noise and echo. One of my microphones is getting pretty worn out and needs replacing so I apologize for the less than stellar audio quality for this show.

We hope you enjoy the show, and if you have any
comments, questions, etc please feel free to e-mail us and leave
comments on the blog or i-Tunes! Thanks for listening.

So I'm back, and quite recently after the previous post to look at some of the models. Now that all of our stuff has come in we can discuss a little bit of the size and quality that we found in the 2 Player Starter Box (Outlaws VS. Lawmen). The models that are plastic are highly detailed and very nice. There are definite mold lines on them which you get with plastic tooling, but GW has learned how to hide them quite well. I actually don't think that’s quite as possible with the WWX models as they come in so many pieces. Where most GW models are 5/6 pieces a model for WWX is closer to 10 in some cases. This I believe probably aids in the higher detail of the models but also make the mold lines that are there almost impossible to hide.

Going through the rest of the box we have the mini rulebook which is very nice for what it is. It lacks the background of the game but has a short blurb on each of the original factions in the game. It also only contains the 3 tournament style scenarios and not the 10 narrative scenarios in the larger book. The box set also came with a single set of templates which are nice with raised edges, numbers and hard plastic. It came with 4 D10 dice which are nice enough for dice but I think they really could've came with more; 4 seems like a minimum, especially considering one of the models has the ability to fire 6 times per action. Finally it came with a counter set to mark statuses and activations of models on the board which comparative to the rest of the box seemed very cheaply made and was the only really disappointing part of the box.

The single models we ordered all came in clamshell plastic and were cast in resin. The models seem quite nice and are no less detailed than the plastics as far as I can see. There is some mold line and flashing that will need to be cleaned up but nothing that isn't expected and of course I assume that there is probably release agent on them so they'll need a warm bath before assembly and painting.

Speaking of painting. With the models coming in so many pieces and some of which are quite tiny and fiddly I think they would really benefit from being painted prior to assembly which doesn't suit my style (or patience) but I feel that it should be said. The cards are nice thick stock and the instructions are extremely nice. Not only are the parts on the sprues numbered and the instructions tell you the number but the instructions also contain pictures of the sprues themselves highlighting the parts for each model in red so that they are even easier to find; really makes finding the parts and getting your models assembled a snap.

After getting a couple of models assembled I realized that the scratch building I was making is a fair bit too large; apparently the Battletech models I was using as an assumptive scale are slightly larger than the WWX models themselves. That said I'm still going to finish it and I'll make it work for me. Until I get some more stuff built though we're going to be playing games on a fantasy table. Maybe we're making our way out west and this is us crossing the Great Plains. We'll get to the west eventually. As for that building; I've lowered the roof. I feel it looks much better now and not so overly large.

Well it finally happened. GW has gone and broke us down with their... well, everything. Interest in Fantasy was super high when the End Times started coming out and over the last couple books it has dropped as the power levels and storyline have continued. Never have I heard so many Fantasy players discuss other game systems and switching out of GW to other companies games and while many of us tried to corral people into the GW Specialist lines that they no longer support it was only a matter of time before the bell rang and rang it has for my local friends and I.

Rang high noon at that. After much discussion over the course of a couple months and some play testing of various game systems we have settled on picking up Wild West Exodus produced by Outlaw Miniatures which is a creation of the company Battlefoam. It takes on an alternate version of history branching off just after the Civil War when a fantastic new technology is discovered which catapults the Wild West into a very Steampunk modern era of warfare. Suddenly the pony express is riding hover bikes, driving buggies and flying in gyrocopters. The old fashioned 6 shooter exists but it now fires explosive ammunition and rifles shoot lasers and plasma. Cybernetic enhancements and body armor protect some from the worst of the weaponry but it truly is wild!

The game uses 35mm models which are quite detailed and very nice. To my knowledge most of the starter boxes available from the company have been tooled in plastic but most of the single order models are still cast in resin. The game uses a D10 dice system which means that your outcomes can vary quite wildly causing miniscule to no damage one second and the next putting your man on the ground with life threatening injuries. Ideally the game started as a Skirmish style game with each side having a handful of models but the current structure has introduced large vehicles with sub-systems and damage allocation tables and the points values seem to be going up in the tournament scene making it a small army game.

My friends and I have decided for now as we do not know where WHFB will end up in the next couple of months to keep our initial investment small and simply stick with the starter boxes and 1 or 2 extra models; not investing in the heavy vehicles. As the starter box contains 13 or so models this will force our hands into staying at low point’s games which will make learning the rules easier and keep the games more casual and fun. The investment isn't terrible either; certainly not any worse than getting yourself into the GW hobby. A starter box is roughly $55 and unlike GW Outlaw offers their mini rulebook for sale on its own and not only in a box set at just $20. Then there is a special multi-template set that runs you $13 so for under $90 you’re in to playing. Like I said we of course added a few extra models but nothing large or to our knowledge what would seem overpowered.

As for what we've chosen to play; well everybody has their own reasons behind that. I ended up with the Outlaws, more because of the two player starter set that comes at reduced cost and extra models. My friend Ryan wanted the Lawmen because he's a big fan of the movie Tombstone and Wyatt Earp was a must have for him. Our friends Dave and Dan went with Warrior Nation and the Union respectively. We're looking quite forward to some exciting shootouts and I'll definitely be posting some stuff to the blog in the future about the game and where it takes us down the rabbit hole as it’s so vastly different the Fantasy.

Until then I'll leave you with this picture of a building I'm making for the game. As it turns out plenty of companies make Wild West themed terrain but I'm not quite as willing to pay for it as I was the WHFB terrain. Most of it seems to be MDF laser cut wood at equivalent price to plastic tooled GW buildings. Considering the old west was filled with rickety wooden structures I'm trying my hand at scratch building with balsa and basswoods. Currently this is what I plan on being the back side of a shop front.

So it’s now April and its been a couple of weeks since Adepticon ended. What a glorious time it was for me and everyone else involved. While I'll obviously talk plenty about Adepticon on the podcast I thought I'd make a post here on the blog and stick all of my battle reports on here, since I imagine I won’t cover them too much on the show.

Showed up Thursday morning and played in both of the 1,000 Point How You Use It Tournaments. Skaven in the AM and my Dwarfs in the PM. Helped staff during the Team Tournament on Friday, played Regiments of Renown that evening. Staffed the Championships on Saturday, played Warbands Saturday night and finally helped staff on Sunday.

I can without question attest that I am indeed getting older as on Saturday I was feeling super worn down and tired. It didn't get much better from there with me becoming physically ill on Sunday afternoon. I blame the hotel food, but it may have just been that combined with lack of sleep. It’s really quite difficult to say. I really enjoyed the vendor hall this year as the new venue provided a larger space than the previous hotel. That isn't to say that I liked this hotel better overall as I think I actually prefer the Weston.

I want to take a moment to sum up my overall thoughts on Adepticon as a whole and I think the best or at least easiest way to get that information across is simply in a list.

Hotel: Was ok, it’s a give or take. Bigger, brighter, slightly more expensive. I did hear some complaints about uncourteous or unhelpful staff, but did not experience these things for myself.

Food: Overpriced hotel food; Weston gets the 1 up on this for Target and the mall food court being in walking distance providing more options.

Cost: Slightly more expensive as I said, but not enough to stop me from attending again, maybe at most like $20 total more.

Vendors: To me it seemed like there were a lot more vendors although I distinctly noticed the lack of a couple long time vendors, Armorcast and Sabol Designs. There were however quite a few new vendors, and a lot of new miniature games being shown, which is cool.

Attendance: I don't have the actual numbers information for the con, but overall it really appeared that attendance was hurt this year across the board as far as Games Workshop events were concerned. There are a myriad of factors that could be to blame for this. New editions, rule sets, venue, time of year, cost, etc... It’s hard to really point the finger at one thing and say that it was at fault.

Swag: The con is still throwing good swag your way just for showing up to the event and Privateer Press continues to knock it out of the park throwing starter boxes in and this year giving out a free rulebook of your choice, either Hordes or War Machine. Talk about trying to convert you, but still you have to appreciate the effort.

Prize Support: For the winners of the tournaments I heard that the prizes were quite nice this year as far as product was concerned. Other than that the customary plaques and this year certificates for a myriad of smaller events in small frames. They seemed a bit cheap but I'm happy with something rather than nothing. Also it should be stated that even with small certificate in frame you still got good product for prizes as I'll discuss later.

So those are my general thoughts. Some highlights for the weekend definitely included some serious victories. I played without question my best Adepticon performance ever, playing 12 games over the weekend and walking away with a 10-2 record. I won all 3 games in the AM How You Use It event but with low point wins I only managed to walk away in 5th place; I won 2 of 3 in the PM event with my Dwarfs and probably robbed myself of a good shot at the 3rd as you can read about in the Battle Report. The Regiments of Renown I won all 3 games and managed Best Overall netting me that certificate in glass and a new Cauldron of Blood. Finally in Warbands I managed a 2 out of 3 and got Best Appearance netting me a nice Battlefront Miniatures Paint and Weathering Sets. So in all I probably got away with roughly $120+ in product from the 2 awards. No complaints from me.

Also, some of my better finds from the vendor hall included a bare plastic 2nd hand Steam Tank for $25, a current edition bare plastic Giant for $25 and a smattering of other smaller miniatures. Again, very happy with the vendor hall. There was even a vendor there who (and this is who I got the Tank and Giant from) was selling 2nd hand cheaper and in better or as good a shape than the usual vendor who sets up in the hallway. I know my friend got a metal Lizardmen Blood Bowl team for I think $17 whereas the guy in the hall probably (if his teams I saw were any indication) would've wanted more along the lines of $30/40+.

So overall I was quite pleased with my experience at Adepticon. Not that I expected I wouldn't be. I will of course attend again in the future given the opportunity and monetary ability to cover it. I actually did come home with money this year so, all told I managed to get away with a 4 day trip at under $400 which isn't too bad. If you've never been to Adetpicon and are considering it than I still highly recommend it; but remember to pace yourself. This con can be long and really take it out of you as it did me this year.

At this point I'm going to post my Battle Reports. If your not the kind of person who is usually interested in reading a lot about other people’s games than this is probably the point at which I'll bid you farewell and thank you for reading today.

THE BATTLE REPORTS

1,000 Point’s How You Use It -AM

Under the assumption that fewer people will be present physically or mentally in the morning I always play my hard list in the morning session. Better chances of actual victory. Probably not true but it usually works out for a 2-1 record. This year’s list was Skaven.

My List:
Greyseer - Lore of Ruin x4
Warlock Engineer - Level 1, Warp Energy Condenser
24 Slaves - Shields
25 Clanrats - Standard, Musician, Shields, Warpfire Thrower
5 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings
5 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings
Warp Lightning Cannon
Doomwheel

Round 1: Ogre Kingdoms

List:
Butcher - Level 2, Ironcurse Icon, Lore of the Maw
Butcher - Level 1, Lore of the Maw
7 Ironguts - Full Command, Gleaming Pendant
7 Ogres - Standard, Musician, Ironfists
Ironblaster

Scenario:
Dawn Attack
Bonuses for killing the General and reducing opponent’s fortitude. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

Skaven Turn 1:
I go first, pushing slightly forward with the blocks and putting the warpfire thrower into a building. The Greyseer skitterleaps into one of the gutter runner blocks who are positioned to the flank of his Ironblaster with his Ironguts on the other side. I throw cracks call hitting both. I miscast with a big template wounding all 5 Gutter Runners and the Seer. I then make 4 out of 5 of my 6+ Ward Saves. Clearly the dice love me. The blaster lives and I kill 1 Irongut. I put every poison sling I have into it causing 3 wounds. WLC misfires but does not explode.

Ogres Turn 1:
All units move forward; operation grill is in effect. High casts a template on the WLC which scatters off. Shoots the WLC with IB but only gets 1 wound.

Skaven Turn 2:
Greyseer miscasts cracks call again killing another Irongut. This time he blows his unit up but does not wound himself. I swear it seems like only Skaven can have this kind of luck. The Doomwheel gets close enough to blast 2 more Ironguts. WLC shoots and kills to regular Ogres.

Ogres Turn 2:
Ironguts charge flank of the Doomwheel. The regular Ogres long charge and hit the WLC. Casts +1S and +1T on the Ironguts. He easily blows the WLC up and breaks the Doomwheel but does not catch it.

Skaven turn 3:
Doomwheel rallies to kill another 2 Ironguts. Greyseer & Warlock Engineer put missiles into the Ogres killing 1.

Ogres Turn 3:
Charges the Slaves with his Ogres and the Wheel with his last Irongut and Butcher. Slaves flee through Clanrats, he redirects but does not make the charge. He hits and kills the Wheel.

Skaven Turn 4:
The Engineer, Warpfire Thrower and Greyseer combine to blast off the last Irongut and Butcher. The Slaves rally. The Clanrats prepare for the charge.

Ogres Turn 4:
Ogres charge the Clanrats. It is a long charge, I flee. He does not catch me. He concedes.

Conclusion:
I felt bad. I knew this would be a seriously uphill game for my opponent from the start. Everything in this list had the ability to just outright kill models with multiple wounds and initiative tests. He was going uphill from the start. Even if we'd continued and he got both the Clanrats and Slaves I still would have had the victory. The fact that I miscast twice on spells I was only throwing 3 dice at sucked but so is the luck of the Skaven. I felt confident going in and played rather aggressively which worked out for me.

Round 2: High Elves

List:
Mage - Level 2, Channeling Staff, Talisman of Endurance, Lore of High Magic
Mage - Level 1, Dispel Scroll, Talisman of Protection, Lore of Beasts
12 Archers - Musician, Champion
12 Spearmen
10 Phoenix Guard - Full Command, Banner of Eternal Flame
5 Dragon Princes - Champion, Sword of Anti-Heros, Enchanted Shield
Eagle Claw Bolt Thrower

Scenario:
Battleline
Bonus for having three units that generate fortitude in the center at the end of the game. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

Skaven Turn 1:
Moved some rats up to a fence for cover, another unit just to the left of a house. Gutter Runners scouted next to the flank of his Phoenix Guard and High wizard. Magic shot off 7 Spearmen with the Beasts wizard who then panicked through the Dragon Princes and off the board. Gutters shot the PG but only kill 1. Doomwheel misfired and drove off in a random direction. WLC killed the Bolt Thrower. Magic missile shot off 2 Dragon Princes.

High Elf Turn 1:
PG turn to face Gutters. Knights move to intercept the Doomwheel. No magic or shooting worked.

Skaven Turn 2:
Gutters moved around the PG flanks out of charge arcs. Doomwheel charged the Dragon Princes. No magic. Gutters shot off a couple archers. Doomwheel shot off the Dragon Princes before combat.

High Elf Turn 2:
PG turn again to face a unit of Gutters. Spears charge the Doomwheel and lose with the DW pursuing and catching. Archers turned and shot at some Gutters. Magic missiles knocked the rest of that unit off.

Skaven Turn 3:
Gutters that are left go around the a building for cover. Greyseer miscasts on a magic missile and kills 1/2 my own Slave unit but also kills 6 archers who panic and run. Doomwheel moves towards the PG.

High Elf Turn 3:
Archers rally. Magic does nothing.

Skaven Turn 4:
Magic Missiles finish off the Archers as the Doomwheel continues to close in on the PG.

High Elf Turn 4:
Throws a large Soul Quench at the DW. I let it off to give him a shot at maybe killing it as a kind of peace offering for the inevitable win. He rolls poorly and only gets 1 wound. He concedes.

Conclusion:
There's a concession thing brewing here. I can't believe the luck I had in this game. The panicking Spears and Wizard. The Doomwheel blasting the Princes off before combat. He made serious tactical errors circling around to face the Gutters when the PG could have easily ignored them and walked around to do something better with their time. He also couldn't get a magic phase of use to save his life; I felt bad for him.

Round 3: Lizardmen

List:
Slaan - Wandering Deliberations, Reservoir of Eldritch Energy, Harmonic Convergence, Soul of Stone, BSB, Standard of Discipline, Channeling Staff
10 Skink Cohort - Full Command
10 Skink Cohort - Full Command
24 Saurus Warriors - Full Command
Salamander - Extra Handler

Scenario:
Blood & Glory
Bonus for breaking your opponent and not being broken. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

*Side note; I was excited this round to find myself playing Michael Jordal. Having known him for years now in the community, I don't recall every having played him and it seemed like it would be quite the fun game.

Lizardmen Turn 1:
He deployed his Saurus block near a building with Slaan. Hid the Skinks behind terrain for the easy capture later and ran his Salamander right up the middle. Used magic to do 1 wound to the WLC and Salamander burned off 2 Gutters.

Skaven Turn 1:
Moved the Gutters way out on the flank of the Salamander and shot at it doing I think 2 wounds, 1 to it and 1 handler. Magic was low and did nothing. Moved forward slightly. Send the Doomwheel out towards the Salamander but as it was closer to the Gutters at the time I restrained shooting. WLC got a good shot and killed 9 Saurus.

Lizardmen Turn 2:
The Slaan and Saurus decided at 9 dead it was time to turn and hide in the building. At least with the D6 random I wouldn't be killing 9 again. Shoots another fireball at me and miscasts killing 4 more Saurus. Salamander burned 6 Slaves and I pass the panic.

Skaven Turn 2:
Doomwheel kills the Salamander after moving. Gutters turn towards nearby Skinks hiding behind a hill. Again slack magic phase. WLC misfires does not fire.

Lizardmen Turn 3:
Decides to either shit or get off the pot. Steps out of building to get into range and throws his magic at a giant fireball towards the Seer either hoping to panic him off or outright kill him. 6 dice = miscast. Blasts 11 of the Clanrats off but I hold on my LD 7 check. Miscast kills another 3 Saurus.

Skaven Turn 3:
We all knew where this was going. With the Saurus and Slaan now at a unit size of only 9 I throw 6 dice at the Dreaded 13th and while I don't get irresistible but I do get a 27. He throws I think 7 dice and failed to stop me. I now have a unit of 9 Clanrats on his side of the table. The Doomwheel peels off after some Skinks and with the Gutters in tow.

Lizardmen Turn 4:
Skink unit behind the building moves in to ensure objective point. Other Skinks run hoping to escape the Doomwheel/Gutters.

Skaven Turn 4:
I shoot the Skinks and reform my new unit towards the building for eventual assault.

Lizardmen Turn 5:
Skinks reform to try and shoot at me. Nothing results.

Skaven Turn 5:
Doomwheel and Gutters finish off the unit of Skinks breaking the fortitude of the Lizards.

Conclusion:
A great game. We both went into this game knowing I was going to be trying to 13th the Slaan and Michael clearly knew that the only way to avoid it was to get rid of the unit with the Seer in it. Once the Salamander was dead the only way to achieve that was to use the Slaan and with me having the Gutters and Doomwheel rolling around to take out his other 2 small Skink units he decided it was go big or go home so he went for it. Having failed to eliminate the threat I felt I should oblige the go big mentality and went for it getting it. Was a great game against a great opponent and I was thrilled to have won all 3 games in the AM session.

End of the AM:
Sadly, and I knew this going into it as all of my games were low victories as I didn't have enough fortitude to get all the points from terrain capturing I did not win the tournament. In fact I placed 5th Overall. Not a disappointing performance in the least but I was hoping I might snag General but it was not to be. Oh well, maybe next year.

1,000 Point’s How You Use It -AM

Now onto the PM session and being under the impression that most people will be there and that I'll have put my best foot forward in the AM I will play a list with no intention of doing anything other than having a good time rolling dice. Hooray Dwarfs! It turned out that my luck hadn't quie abandoned me yet though and I found myself winning games I felt I had no right to be winning.

My List:
Master Engineer - Rune of Stone
11 Quarrelers - Shields
15 Longbeards - Standard, Musician, Shields
15 Ironbreakers - Standard, Musician, Shields
Cannon - Rune of Forging, Rune of Burning
Organ Gun - Rune of Accuracy

Round 1: Bretonnia

List:
Lord - Heartwood Lance, Gromril Great Helm, Knights Vow
Paladin - Biting Blade, Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone, Knights Vow
7 Knights of the Realm - Full Command
9 Knights of the Realm - Full Command
9 Knights of the Realm - Full Command

Scenario:
Meeting Engagement

Bonuses For having fortitude in opponents deployment zone. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

So I didn't keep accurate notes during the 2nd session of the How You Use It tournaments. Matter of fact I didn't keep any. So these will be pretty much simple recaps.

I went first, put some random shots in and killed a Knight or two. He moved forward on me with all 3 lances leaving me with the long charges which I was obliged to take because there's no sense in not trying for it as fail or not he'll be into me on the next turn. Breakers and Longbeards made it into two of the lances. The Quarrelers moved forward to keep the 3rd lance from being able to hit a flank. Breakers actually broke the lance they hit and held back to later support the Longbeards if necessary. The Longbeards lost combat but held as both his characters were fighting in that combat. His turn the Knights rallied and the 3rd lance hit the Quarrelers killing them and running them down. Longbeards hold again. My turn the Breakers go into the side of the character lance and we break it catching it. The small lance that rallied hits the Longbeards and the lance that went through the Quarrelers turns towards my war machines only do disappear to a round or two of Organ Gun fire. The Longbeards eventually die but take the lance down to a single man who makes it to my Organ Gun and kills it. My cannon then snipes off that last night giving me a win having tabled my opponent. Damn good game. Turns out that Ironbreakers are super resilient.

Round 2: Empire

List:
Battle Wizard Lord - Level 4, Lore of Heavens, Dispel Scroll, Dragonbane Gem
Captain of the Empire - Full Plate, Pegasus, Lance, Charmed Shield, Dawnstone, Potion of Foolhardiness
10 Archers - Musician
17 Crossbowmen - Musician, Standard Bearer
4 Demigryphon Knights - Musician
Great Cannon

Scenario:
Battleline

Bonuses Start with 5 points and lose one for every non fleeing enemy unit that generates fortitude on your table half at game end. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

My opponent built his list clearly planning on the Demi's and Captain doing the heavy lifting. His Wizard went with his Archers and those and the Crossbowmen hid behind a house to start the game. His cannon was central and his Demi's and Captain went on far flank. I set up everything quite centrally. My turn 1 saw me knock the cannon off and move forward. He responded by bringing the Knights and Captain around the flank. My 2nd turn I killed a single Demigryph and they fled off of the table; that's what happens when you hug the table edge like that. Bummer luck though. Now forced to do something more than depend on the Demi's he brings his Wizard and Archers around the corner and starts throwing Chain Lightning like its going out of style knocking 1 or 2 guys out of each unit for a turn or two while the Captain fails a charge trying to get to the Quarrelers. For two turns I drug my Organ Gun into the field so I could get in range of his Wizard and finally I got it to the point where he could either be in range to throw Lightning or out of Range of the Organ Gun but not both. He voiced his decision out loud stating that he'd risk it as the Engineer wasn't next to the Organ Gun being in another unit as he was and with long range and skirmished he thought he'd be ok. His Captain hit the Quarrelers this turn but they held. He chained lightning again and killed a few more. He made an error though; I quick reformed my Longbeards and walked 3" to get the Engineer into range of the Organ Gun. I proceeded to knock 7 of the 10 archers off. He passed his panic check, but then I cannon sniped the Wizard out. His Captain killed the Quarrelers a turn later and the game ended with a victory to me. I'm not sure I should've won this game. In fact I think I probably was looking at a hard fought draw if not for the Demi's fleeing on turn 2. Luck was still with me for the day apparently.

Round 3: Skaven

List:
Greyseer - Lore of Ruin x4
Chieftan - BSB, Charmed Shield
Warlock Engineer - Doomrocket
22 Clanrats - Standard, Musician
46 Slaves - Musician
45 Slaves - Musician
6 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings
Hellpit Abomination

Scenario:
Battleline
Bonuses for every enemy unit that is dead or fled at games end up to 5. Secondary bonuses for controlling terrain with a unit that generates fortitude.

As my friend Ryan so aptly put it, a taste of my own medicine. This list is nearly identical to the Skaven list I ran the last 2 years at Adpeticon in the 1,000 point lists. Even worse I was tired at this point and completely screwed myself as we'll get to. He moved forward aggressively throwing magic and doomrockets at me. I tried to set up for a flank on the Abomination but movement 3 doesn't exactly lend well to this. The Gutters came in throwing at the Quarrelers and War Machines once they got behind them. I shot the Abomination twice with the Cannon and numerous times with the Organ Gun. He made all his regeneration saves for 2 turns before he got to me. Notice I said he made his Regeneration saves. Yeah, that part about me screwing myself; I had flaming on my cannon. For god sakes I could have had a chance at winning all 3 games in this tournament as well but I screwed up and let the Abomination get to me at which point the game was over. It basically bowled through both the combat blocks one turn after the other and the Quarrelers eventually got a charge off killing the Gutters but also dying shortly after that to the Abomination. I conceded. Man did I ever blow that game. I actually had the tools I needed and just made a massive mistake not remembering or checking my list. So stupid. Still it was a great time and I came in 12th overall which again, not bad.

100 Point’s Regiments of Renown

I've played RoR in a small tournament before and it was a lot of fun. I signed up for the evening tournaments because generally low point tournaments result in more just rolling dice and having fun than throwing abusive competitive lists together to try and win. This looked like a good time to me. I especially love that your Leader gets to increase abilities over games. Spring boarding off of my great Thursday I was hoping to do well and pre-con I was hoping to re-invigorate my enthusiasm for my Dwarf army which I haven't been very excited to play with since the new book. I wanted at least 2 shooters which meant I needed 8 models and I wanted to make sure that my Leader could both kill and not be killed. The thing about Regiments is that it really is a huge deal to have high wounds, armor or multiple attacks. It really favors Ogres in my opinion.

My List:
Ironbreaker - Leader, Champion, Dog of War, Boots of Haste, Rune of Stone, Rune of Speed
Longbeard - Dog of war, Spiky Shoulder Plate, Shield
Quarreler - Dog of War, Last Chance Shot, Shield
Thunderer - Shield
Warrior - Shield
Warrior - Shield
Warrior - Shield
Warrior - Great Weapon

Round 1: Ogre Kingdoms
Facing off against Ogres in round 1 didn't make me excited. The impact hits, multiple attacks and multiple wounds to get through had me worried. He has 2 Ogres and a handful of Gnoblars. We went straight at it moving forward. My shooting took off a Gnoblar and a Wound off of an Ogre, but it was the Ironbreaker and Great Weapon Warrior who did the meat of the work. The Ogres managed to whiff their attacks and impact hits when charging and me getting +1S on the charge turned out to be a huge deal when it came up. I chopped the ogres up and shortly thereafter minced the Gnoblars tabling my opponent only losing 2 Dwarfs. At the end of the game my Leader ended up with +1 Toughness. A T5 Ironbreaker with 2+/5+ in hand to hand is pretty awesome.

Round 2: Vampire Counts
I was not worried about this list at all. Two Dire Wolfs, some Ghouls and a couple of Grave Guard. I managed to shoot both of the Wolfs off and the Ghouls even with Poison were no match for Dwarf armor. I only lost a single model this game and it was sadly my Leader who a Grave Guard managed to get Killing Blow on, even a 5+WS from my Parry didn't save me from that. At the end of this game I also tabled my opponent. The increase this game was taking my Leader to LD 11. Yeah, this army was never going to break.

Round 3: Demons of Chaos
Facing Demons of Chaos had my quite worried, but the opponent took some fluffy in there too. He had a Harpy, a couple of Slaneesh, a Bloodletter and a Khrone Dog. I can't remember but I'm pretty sure he had another model too. Either way we went to town straight at eachother again and man did he make a lot of 5+ ward saves. The game was a blood bath and it came down to a Slaneesh model, his Khorne Dog Leader and my Ironbreaker who managed to eat his way through the rest of the lot taking me to a win. My final upgrade although I'd never get the chance to use it was an increase in attacks bringing him to 3. Man that would've been really nice this game.

Conclusion
Best Overall! Hooray! I won something. After having an amazing Thursday at the 1,000 point events and not placing I got something. Somewhat hollow as 1/2 the players didn't show for the event that signed up but I think that was really kind of what happened across the board on fantasy this year. Still I'll take what I get. I had 3 fun games against 3 good guys and enjoyed the change of pace. It was a lot of fun and I'd happily play this event again assuming that it still exists next year and doesn't get thrown out by 9th edition. Thanks to Andy Sherman for running it.

500 Point’s Warbands

I chose Warbands for the same reason I really went to Regiments and that was for fun and to roll dice. I decided to take a weird list and throw two Gyro's in at 500. Significant points investment into low strength attacks but the template could and at least once did prove quite powerful. Admittedly of course I did play a gunline at 500.

My List:
Master Engineer
10 Quarrelers - Standard, Musician, Shields
Gyrocopter
Gyrocopter
Organ Gun

Round 1: Lizardmen
He had a Skink Cohort, a Level 2 Skink, Salamander and a big block of I think 20 Saurus Warriors. Came straight across the field at me and the Organ Gun and Gyro's spent 2 turns blasting the Saurus to death before going after the Skinks. At one point the Salamander got into combat with a Gyro but somehow I managed to defeat it. A Gyro charged the Priest and killed it in hand to hand tabling my opponent. Not that it wasn't expected given the amount of shooting I had.

Round 2: Demons of Chaos
Holy crap, I thought I broke my list was broke. Dud had a unit of 15 Plaguebearers, a Hearld of Nurgle, a unit of 2 Beasts and 2 single Beasts of Nurgle running about. There was no way I was coming out of this game alive but I was going to try. For like 10 seconds... In his turn 1 he moved forward, proceeded to roll a 12 for magic phase summoning another unit of Plaguebearers behind my stuff. Oh and how many you ask? Yeah, he rolled 12 again so he got a free 15 man unit on turn 1 behind my gunline. Game over; I was tabled.

Round 3: Vampire Counts
A unit of Dire Wolfs, a small unit of Grave Guard and a bunker of Zombies to get his Vampire across to me. Ran straight at me, not that he had a lot of option in the matter. I killed the dogs first and started putting wounds into units. He made a mistake and forgot to charge my Gyrocopter which he absolutely needed to do. In the spirit of fun I let him make his charge which he said wouldn't do anything and I told him would; I know my army. He smoked the Gyro, overran into the next Gyro and killed it to but pursued off the table. I managed to destroy the entire Zombie unit with concentrated fire; and the Scenario gave me a magic ring with a signature spell in it as a bound item so I had Shem's too. The next turn his small unit of Grave Guard came back on but his Vampire (now alone) failed the charge on my Quarrelers. His face sunk as he knew he was doomed but again in the spirit of fun instead of unloading an Organ Gun into his Vampires face I charged with my Quarrelers. A Vampire should at least have a chance at winning that combat but he rolled pretty poorly and I managed to kill him. He conceded.

Conclusion
With the loss against the Demon list I knew there was no possible way to win Overall and General seemed rather unlikely as well. Turns out though that I got Best Appearance which was totally cool by me. Got a nice paint set and some scenic water, weathering powders and such. I was super happy. I was also I think the only player who'd bothered to bring a display board with me to the event which probably didn't hurt me. I didn't really get a chance to look at all the armies that were playing but from what I did see I would say I was among the better painted so it feels fairly deserved. I'm not the greatest painter but I'm good enough. Again, I had a lot of fun in this event and would happily play again next year if Andy runs it again.

Hello everyone,

I'm happy to announce and provide you with Issue #2 of our Quarterly e-zine: The Waaagh Cast Quarterly!

Its quite exciting to have issue #2 finally up and available to download. The feedback for our first issue was great and I'm very happy with the response we received and the number of downloads it garnered. I know it doesn't quite scratch everyone's itch but much like the podcast I've hosted for years, you just can't be everything to everyone.

Anyway I hope you all enjoy the e-zine for what it is. You can click the image or the link below to download the e-zine in convenient PDF format.

So, I'm certain most of the miniature community; at least in the US but most likely also abroad as we've had a lot of people from across the world attend are aware, Adepticon is just over the horizon. As I type this I am only 3 days away from leaving my wife and children for 4 days of glorious gaming, drinking, eating and hanging out with friends and like minded individuals whom I often see only once a year. To say that I am looking forward to it would be understatement.

When my friends and I originally signed up for Adepticon this year I was pretty trepidacious about it. After having skipped last year to attend my first board game convention with my wife (Geekway to the West) and with The End Times upon us my fantasy mojo has been pretty sapped. That's not to say I don't like fantasy still, but the competitive side, the tournament play has pretty much been ruined for me. So while I wanted to play in the 2 day championships I decided to forgo that and play in the events that the End Times rules will likely effect the least. I'll be participating in both of the 1,000 point How You Use It tournaments, the 100 point Regiments of Renown and the 500 point Warbands.

After much thought and contemplation I am going to run my Dwarfs in 3 of the 4 events. I'll be using Skaven in one of the 1,000 point tournaments. You can't use the same race in both tournaments so I had to. Originally I was going to try and use Empire but could not settle on a list that I felt was good enough to feel like I was actually competing. Probably more due to my model restriction than actual ability. I always try to build pretty all around tournament builds so we'll see how I come out of this one. A couple years ago I came quite close to winning one of the 1,000 point tournaments and this will be the first time participating in a Regiments of Renown or Warbands. Hopefully the Dwarfs don't fail me here.

I'll also be volunteering much of the weekend. I learned over time that this provides a lot more ability to relax and not ware yourself so thin that you just want to die by the end. I'm looking super forward to seeing my old friends and especially browsing the numerous vendors this year as the vendor hall is bigger than ever before! I'm going to be so poor when I come home. If you've never attended Adepticon then you should probably consider it some time. Its not a cheap tournament or convention to attend at all, but it is really fun and will blow your mind at the sheer size of it.

Also of course there is the board game hall which in previous years has only been open on Sunday night but this year sees itself being open the entire convention weekend. If it weren't for my already packed schedule of tournaments and volunteering I would be certainly spending a lot of time in there. As it is I will simply be there again on Sunday night whittling away my hours at the end of the convention. If your in attendance and want to I'd love to say hi to anyone who finds me. Hopefully those attending have a great time; I know I always do.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-48405648106760433292015-03-03T15:02:00.000-06:002015-03-03T15:02:13.730-06:00Episode #79: Nagash & Glotkin Narrative Rules

Hello everyone,

Excitedly trying to get back to the reason I'd restarted the show which is discussion and playing of campaigns and narrative rules. I'm happy to be joined by our old friend Chuck this episode to discuss the Darkest Depths, Haunted Terrain and Streets of Death rules from the Nagash and Glotkin books. While we haven't tried these rules yet I'm looking forward to trying to incorporate some things into a small 10 player tournament I'll be running this summer in my basement.

Hopefully you enjoy everything. If you have any questions, comments or such please remember to e-mail us!

Okay, okay, I admit my last post was pretty trash. Had no real content, and not that many of my posts do, but I actually have some time to sit down and throw something together and I actually have a little something to talk about. In case the picture didn't give it away I'm going to be talking about Gorkamorka at some point in this post, but for now let's hit some basics first and check out the New Years Resolution update and head them down one at a time.

Complete 5 Tables of Terrain
Hard at work while I type with tree discs and area pieces drying with their first flock on them. Painting tomorrow, then assembling tree's.

Run 10 Player Tournament
Still waiting on the terrain thing, although I did begin assembling rules, scenario sheets and scoring information. So again, I'm working.

Decide on my 4th Army
As I said on the last post, I sold the Lizardmen and thus have completely decided on Tomb Kings as my 4th army. That gives me, Dwarfs, Empire, Skaven and Tomb Kings. Pretty diverse I think.

Stick to my recordings
Actually set up to record with Chuck hopefully next week for our March Episode.

Play my Board Games
Pretty glum on this front, as I've only had one board game night since the start of 2015 and only managed to play 3 games. King of Tokyo, Quarriors and Downfall of Pompeii. All excellent games by the way.

Try a new GT
Still haven't decided.

Build, paint and play Dreadfleet (at least once)
No Progress here. Too busy doing other things.

Play a Mega Game
We have discussed it in our little local group. Everyone seems keen, but we also seem rather trepidacious about 9th edition. Will have to wait and see.

Blog Post at least once a month
What I'm doing right now!

Stick to the Waaagh Cast Quarterly
Hard at work on Issue 2. I have quite a bit done for it, but I'm definitely still missing pieces here and there. I still have a month to finish though so I'm hoping to get some serious work done on it in the next couple of weeks.

Now with all that said I've at least completed one of the goals. Although I should say it was clearly the easiest one since it only required me to sell an army. I'd really like to get some more board games in, but the weather and just general busy schedules between my friends and I is really holding that one back. On the gaming front I'm excited that I'll be getting my first games in with my Tomb Kings army this weekend. Very excited for that.

Now, lets get to the whole Gorkamorka thing. Many people are pretty worried about what 9th edition Warhammer will bring. This includes me and my friends locally and while I'd like to say we're all very hopeful we are also very cautious. Naturally there has been talk of other systems, what we'd do, if we'd take breaks, etc... Much the same discussion that most gaming groups have when something like a new edition looms its might head. Somewhere in my line of thinking I got to wondering about GW games that could at least be a stop gap for us if we were to take a short break. Something with some meat but that didn't require a world full of new purchases and rulebooks that we are unfamiliar with.

I debated Mordheim, Necromunda and obviously Blood Bowl. There was some minor discussion about Malifueax and I kind of like the look of Wild West Exodus. We are probably going to test out a number of these games, but I really wanted to stick to GW just because if you've played one of the GW games you've generally got the basic rules of all their games down. Being an experienced player I know GW's general rules, charts, measurements, etc... This means that the barrier to entry into any of their game systems is much lower. Not to mention the Specialist Games that they no longer support have their rules in abundance online as PDF files, usually if not currently at some point provided by GW themselves.

Examining the Specialist Games I wanted to try Gorkamorka most. I really like Blood Bowl, but it seems a little samey after a while; not that most games don't. Mordheim is kind of a broken system that usually boils down to guys with two hand weapons doing all the killing with house ruling a lot and Necromunda I've played and enjoyed quite a bit, but it always lacked that extra little bit of excitement that I finally decided Gorkamorka could give in the presence of vehicles. Man does that look like fun. Just Mad Max style racing at each other break neck speed letting bullets fly. I do admit that Joe Rodgers from Pointhammered has definitely had a little influence here as listening to them discuss Gorkamorka on their show really made me look it up. Sounds like fun to me. So currently I'm watching a lot of eBay auctions and browsing Bartertown pretty hard.

Something about the Orc (Ork) silliness has always drawn me to them as well. Probably why I've owned 3 Orc armies in the past. They just seem so forward. No scheming or shenannigans behind the Orks. Its all Dakka for them. I've read the rules a number of times now and like I said, having a working knowledge of most of the GW game systems it all seems pretty forward. If anyone at all is interested in looking it up for themselves then I highly recommend the following sites.

Website with the Rules pdf's

http://gorkamorka.co.uk/

That 2nd link is just a group of guys who are quite dedicated to the game. Lots of good chatter and articles there for perusal. The local group doesn't seem too particularly enthusiastic about it, but that doesn't mean they aren't willing to try it and the power that 1 game can have is impressive as discussed in the last Quarterly magazine. Hopefully I can get the gear and get them into it. Go give it a look yourself.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-26454000207656896032015-02-16T20:28:00.001-06:002015-02-16T20:28:41.076-06:00Going once, twice, sold!

Just a hobby update today, particularly since I'm trying to keep to some of my resolutions which should be nearly impossible to screw up. Namely, keep up on the blog with a minimum of one post a month.

So I sold the Lizardmen Army I had sitting now that I have my Tomb Kings army. That's one resolution down for 2015 as I've cut myself back to 4 armies again.

The other goals are so lofty that I may not see a lot of progress on them for many months. I have however been quite busy updating my Tomb King army's paint job. If your interested in those pictures you can either check out our Flickr feed or head over to the Tomb Kings forum and see the threat here.

Not much of a post today, but just excited to have any hobby progress.

Also I'm looking into Gorkamorka. More on that some other time.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-90981884070761813002015-02-02T21:38:00.000-06:002015-02-02T21:38:22.744-06:00Episode #78: The Ramblin Man...

Howdy ya'll,

Good lord its been a hot minute since we've managed to settle down enough to record a show. Roughly 4 months in fact. Sorry about that. The end of the year is always a hectic time for everyone. Anyway, my buddy Dave and I finally had some time to just sit and BS and that is literally what we did. Didn't really discuss what we've done lately, but we did get up to just talking about End Times for a solid hour plus. I can't say your guarantee'd to get anyithg out of this show but who knows; give a listen and you might.

As always, don't hesitate to send e-mails, or contact us through any of ht eother methods availalbe; Twitter, Facebook, etc... with questions or comments.

Every year I try to get 52 games in which would account for 1 game a week. This is how I try to justify the cost of my hobby. I figure if I were to actually get a game in a week then the massive amount of cash I’ve dropped into this hobby over the years I will not have gone too far afoul. Now, that said this never happens. I’ve been keeping track for 5 years and only once have I actually hit the 52. That said this is actually the furthest year I’ve been from the number with only 40 games played.

I also like to keep track of my overall Win/Loss/Draw percentages. This is the first year that my Win percentage has fallen under my Loss 21 games of my 40 games resulting in a loss. Only a single Draw, and then 18 games in the Win category. That’s 45% Win, 53% Loss and 3% Drawn. The only other year that my games resulted in a lower than 50% Win rate was back in 2011 when I actually had a tie between my Win/Loss at 17 games apiece. So this tells me that I played less and apparently got worse.

I also keep track of this all by armies that I played. This year I played:
12 games with Dwarfs
4 with Skaven
20 with Empire
4 with Orcs & Goblins

Having played ½ of my games with my Empire army I’m not super shocked that my win percentage with them was over 50% of their own games with 11 wins, 8 losses and my single draw of the year. I lost 3 of my 4 games with Skaven, 8 of 12 with Dwarfs and 2 of the 4 with O&G.
Two of my Skaven games were lost in Triumph & Treachery games of Warhammer which makes me feel a little better as T&T really has the ability to mess with an army by making things work so differently from a standard game of Warhammer. The Dwarf book I never really did get a good grasp on and the O&G I only played for a mini campaign that Chuck and I did and right afterward sold the army.

Its interesting to look back on my old tracking sheets and see that every year seems to favor a single army. This year was clearly Empire. The last 2 years were Skaven and the 3 years before that were all Dwarfs.
I noticed also that this year saw the fewest tournament games for me resulting in more fun games at home with my friends but also this means that many games played were just flat out battle lines as opposed to scenario’s. This may help attribute to my losses being higher as in tournaments when you have scenario play you can often go after objectives and mitigate the loss factor sometimes eeking out a win or draw.
I’m not entirely sure what to make of all of this and I never really am. I just always think its interesting to see my overall performance for a year and which army I favored. I’d like to say I’m going to get into my Tomb King army heavily next year, but the fact of the matter is that with a new Vermin Lord due out this month that seems less and less likely. Unless of course I run across a Nagash model really cheap and then I’ll definitely throw down on some of that.

Hopefully I’ll perform better next year as I’ll be trying to participate in more tournament gaming but with the advent of The End Times who knows how that’ll work out.
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-11340022732324927312015-01-06T21:32:00.000-06:002015-01-06T21:32:55.215-06:002015 - The Resolutions!Oh dear it’s the time of year again; the time when we evaluate the failed resolutions of the previous year and come up with some more for ourselves to probably fail at. It seems a grim outlook on the situation but it often is the correct one. I don't think I've ever in my life managed to nail all of my resolutions and I assume I will continue that streak into 2016, but for now let's look back on the successes and failures from 2014.

First let us take a moment to go over my 2014 resolutions.

-Buy no more than 5 new Board Games-
I bought 4 games. I also traded for 2 more but since trading involves getting rid of a game I won’t be counting that against me. Only 4 is a success for me and even more so the fact that the games I did get seem to be a hit with everyone who has played them.

-Participate in the local X-Wing League or run Season 3 of The Waaagh Cast Cup Blood Bowl League-
Our local X-Wing league died pretty much as soon as the last one ended resulting in no 2nd season of the league. It sucks, but I take consolation hat I didn’t invest further than Wave 3 at least. I've debated selling my stuff but I think it’s still a worthwhile game to keep at the level I have for random one off games. The Blood Bowl League also did not make it back into rotation this year. I enjoyed running the League but my old PC, while it can run the game is getting awfully sluggish and out of date. I’d like to say maybe I’ll get a new one and run the league but honestly I don’t have a whole lot of motivation to play Blood Bowl right now so running it is even less likely.

-Play four games of Warhammer using supplemental rules-
I'd like to say with certainty that this was completed. I know for a fact I've played at least four games using Triumph & Treachery and I know also that I've squeezed in at least two or so using Storm of Magic (at least the Scrolls of Binding part). Heck, Chuck and I played a game just a few weeks ago using the Legions of Chaos and Lore of Undeath rules which I'm going to go ahead and put under the supplemental category.

-Complete my Skaven Army-
Well I made a very specific list of models I wanted to complete for this last year and out of those models I failed to complete only 1. However! I also added a model that wasn't on the list and required a lot more effort on my part in both the converting and painting. I dropped the Ratling Gun and added a Verminlord. Not to mention I painted up the Bell and Rat Ogre pieces and got my Plague Furnace worked up to the point where I can swap in and out as I want. I count this as a successful completion of a goal.

-Paint at least 1,000 Points of Orcs & Goblins-
Not only did I not paint 1,000 points of O&G, but I sold the army and then acquired tow more over the course of 2014. Completely shameful.

-Attend at least five local events-
I'm so disappointed that I failed to achieve this goal. Between my local store and the Bloomington store that Chuck and I run tournaments at, there are on average at least ten total events a year to consider local. I managed to make four of them. I can blame part of this on the fact that my family and I moved homes which was essentially a two month process taking me out of two events but even then I should still have been able to make five. 2015 I shall redouble my efforts.

-Achieve a Top 10 finish at a Tournament-
I wasn't shocked at all that I didn't get this one done. I only attended one GT in 2014 and that was Blood in The Sun IV. At just shy of 100 players, I knew it was unlikely. I think in the future I will stop trying to shoot for top places. That’s probably when I'll see the most success of course but I think trying to build for that kind of placing causes too much anxiety in game.

-Construct five Warhammer tables worth of Terrain-
I was awfully close on completing this; especially in the last four months of the year. I finished up two buildings I had sitting, bought, assembled and painted two more along with a host of extra's like fences, gravestones, objective markers and trees. I did not however finish it all. I have all the terrain I want except for forests and hills. So, a failure in 2014 but definitely going back on the list for 2015 as I feel certain I can achieve.

-Run a 10 Player Tournament-
I also failed to do this, particularly as it rather required the success of the previous goal which didn't occur either. Again this will be added to the 2015 list as I feel confident in my ability to complete this goal now. I'm in the planning stages of running the tournament on the weekend of my birthday in June. It will be an invite only type of thing but considering all I need are the aforementioned forests and hills it will almost certainly happen barring something completely unforeseen happening.

-Lose Weight-
Yes, I should have not even put this on the list. The always useful cop out of, I just want to lose a few pounds. At the time of writing I'm actually up over where I was last year, but the most important take away is that I held steady throughout the year always fluxing two or three pounds in either the minus or positive direction. Perhaps losing weight past where I'm at just isn't for me. I will not take the cop out goal for 2015; I am going pure gaming for my resolutions and I’ll try to maintain or lose weight but again won’t use it as a goal.

Ouch, I only managed to make 3 out of my 10 goals for 2014. Even worse is that I always have a goal that I don’t list which is to play 52 games of Warhammer over the course of a year. I fell short by 12 this year and while I often miss this goal I never feel too bad about it because I'm always relatively close. Last year I fell short by I think 8 or so and the year before that I actually hit I do believe. A big break this year was that I did not attend Adepticon and so lost out on probably 6-9 games there which would've boosted my numbers quite a bit. This year however I will again be attending Adepticon and currently have 12 games on the docket. I will also be attending Geekway to The West which is the boardgame convention in St. Louis that I skipped Adepticon for last year. I'm pretty excited as both of those events fall in early/mid spring and so the first chunk of 2015 looks like it will be full of gaming greatness. That said let’s go ahead and get onto my goals for 2015!

#1: Complete 5 Tables of Terrain
Currently I need to build 7 forests and 7 hills. I feel confident that I can and will finish this.

#2: Run 10 Player Tournament
Again, given that I complete goal #1, I feel confident that I shall finish goal #2.

#3: Decide on my 4th Army
Like I said, I sold the O&G and acquired two more (Lizards & Tomb Kings) but I'd long ago set myself at only having 4 armies, so one shall stay and one must go.

#4: Stick to my recordings
I got rather lax on this in 2014. I will redouble my commitment and achieve one episode per month. Also, before someone points out that its past my usual release date the January Episode is going to be late.

#5: Play my Board Games
All told I own over 120 board games. My goal is to play them. All. I will make a list, acquire no new games and play everything I already own. Now I have to find at least one person to assist me other than my wife. A lofty goal to say the least.

#6: Try a new GT
This is the most unlikely I think to occur as my current savings budget for tournaments really is only allowing Adepticon. Still I will try to make it to a never before attended by me GT. I’m thinking maybe Screw City GT in the fall.

#7: Build, paint and play Dreadfleet (at least once)
It’s been sitting for far too long in my basement. I looked at it towards the end of 2014, but never got around to working on it. It seems like it will be a very fun one off style game to play with the guys on game nights so hopefully I can get this in.

#8: Play a Mega Game
I haven't had a Mega Game in so long and I think we're it will probably be easy to talk at least one friend into blowing an entire day on it. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of 4,000 points per person. It excites me just thinking about it.

#9: Blog Post at least once a month
Much like keeping up with the other things that I try to schedule on a monthly, weekly, quarterly basis this will go here too. Sometimes I'm really good at posting on the Blog but usually I'm not. I shall endeavor to be better, and hopefully make them worthwhile.

#10: Stick to the Waaagh Cast Quarterly
By now you've likely seen the first issue which I released at the beginning of January. Hopefully its taken off and we're getting good response by this point but I will do my best to stick with it. I mean, come on; with issue 1 out the door I only have to put together 3 more. Of course it depends on assistance from the public and my friends. Hopefully it isn’t hard to find good help.

Okay, there are 10 goals for 2015. I'm going to print a couple of copies of this and hang them around my game/hobby rooms. Hopefully that will keep my mind on them enough to get them done. A banner achievement would be to complete them all but realistically I’m hoping to just get 6 or 7. Wish me luck and I wish you all luck in your 2015 goals, hobby and otherwise.
New year and new project!

I’m so excited today to announce the release of Issue #1 of The Waaagh Cast Quarterly!

This is something I’d started working on in the new year of 2014 but after two months of work with layout programs and everything else I finally gave up on. However towards the end of 2014 my interest in the project was renewed and I slapped it together and forced my way through it. Of course it was created primarily in Microsoft Word which is not a layout program and so it unquestionably has a more newsletter look than magazine look but it definitely has everything I wanted in it.

I feel at just shy of 30 pages it definitely has some good weight to it for a fan produced e-zine. Battle Reports, Army Displays, Terrain Build and my personal favorite piece is the cardboard punch-out type article. I really missed the days when White Dwarfs included add-ons for your games in the form of punch out rules/tokens/buildings and absolutely had a vision of using this stuff when I started working on it so long ago.

I hope that you all enjoy the magazine and encourage you to spread it around your army forums that your part of, or amongst your friends and e-mail circles. Hopefully it will receive a good reception and I’ll have plenty of people help put the next and future issues together. The goal is to release an issue quarterly and since I managed to get this out on the 1st of January I’ll be aiming for April 1st. If you want to help make sure to get into contact with me!

Download the .pdf at the link below!

The Waaagh Cast Quarterly .pdf 5.46MB
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-39217701681159014772014-11-30T20:25:00.001-06:002014-11-30T20:28:28.769-06:00Full Stop...

Yup, in case you haven't guessed it my hobby has ground to a full stop lately. That includes the podcast. This has nothing to do with lack of motivation but more lack of time. The holidays are hectic for everyone but combined with both of my sons in scouting and the other family activities of my usual cohort of friends that record the show with me we not only missed Novembers show, but Decembers as well. Apologies intrepid listeners.

I've continued grinding on though with my painting quest as of late. I've completed an Orc Blood Bowl team, and am furiously working on the Humans. These are just the base sets, but I was impressed with how well the Orcs held up considering their age. I bought, assembled and painted two Great Eagles. Finished my 5th ed. Marauder Giant as well as a Dragon and Rider. Did some Freehand Banners on the Empire as well as finishing a unit of Handguns, Halberds and Knights. Also the last of my Dwarfs in my Ironbreakers. Most of this can be seen in my Twitter feed so go there and check out the photo's! https://twitter.com/Waaaghcast/media

I plan to be back with a show in early January that I'll probably end up recording sometime in mid December. At least that's the plan. Stupid holidays...

As is often the case with those in our hobby we often do our best work (or at least fastest) when deadlines are looming ahead. Be it last minute painting in the week or even night before a tournament to slamming an entirely new army together in a specific amount of time for some kind of hobby challenge or article. We’ve all been guilty of just stacking our projects up on top of eachother until we’ve lost track of what it was we were trying to do and things slip off to the wayside to be forgotten for months or even years.

With the new house/game room and a new army to tickle my fancy I’ve really been on the hobby horse lately and now I’ve decided to drive myself towards a goal by year end. I could simply say to finish as many projects as I can, but that leaves too much open to chance of me slipping off track. While finishing as many unfinished projects is certainly a goal in its own, I’ve also decided to drive myself to get the 3 armies I have painted up to 4,000 point legal lists using the current game rules. This isn’t too difficult as I’ve already got well past 3,000 painted for most of the armies but sometimes it’s that final drive that’s the hardest.

As it happens I’ve already finished my Skaven army to this level having painted the Verminlord last month. My Dwarfs are actually already able to be fielded at 4,000 which is why they are on the back burner with my collection only currently having 21 unpainted models. My Empire need the most work. While I can do 3,000 with what I have, the place the army lacks is the ability to hit the 25% core requirement. To fix this I’m adding a second unit of 10 Handgunners, 2 Handgunner Champiosn with Long Rifles and a unit of 25 Halberdiers to the list. Also I’m painting a unit of 5 Reiksguard Knights to use as a chaff blocker.

Since I have my Empire out and on the table I’ve also decided to spruce some things up. The army was a secondhand army when I got it and while I’ve fixed it up as much as I can and it looks pretty good now, I’ve been trying to find ways to improve its appearance scores. The paint scheme is pretty basic and the conversion work is super simple which aren’t earning me too many points. The basing does fine and the theme and display are good so that really only left me one place to try and earn an extra point or two and that was in the ‘freehand’ category. Now, I should say that I nearly have palsy as bad as I shake, but I decided to give it a go. Especially since my Empire is old and the banners are the large flat open ones from the older edition models. You can see the results above. I have 3 banners in the army with this look and then I have a unit of Knights Panther and Demi-gryphon/Crocodiles which I haven’t decided on what to do yet. Eventually I’ll get to that too.

That’s all I have. Just a little plug about what I’m working on.
Hobby on fellow readers. Hobby on.

Hello and thanks for joining us on Episode 77 of the Waaagh Cast!

In this Episode friend Ryan G. and I get together to plays some small narrative scenario's from the old Skirmish book. Namely the aptly titled Asssassin! and Slayers! scenarios. I bet you can't guess what the stories are for these two games!

We talk about a couple of tournaments and as stated in the show here is the link to the Screw City GT.

The last half of the show is primarily us talking about hobby and all that we've done since our last show way back in June. Hopefully it isn't too boring for you all to listen to.

As always, feel free to write the show, leave comments, reviews, suggestions, etc can all be emailed to us or left here on the blog. Thanks for listening!
Picture 1 is the initial charge into the General's tent and the troops awaking to the sound of fighting. The 2nd is the Assassin making off after the dirty deed has been done.

The Assassin makes it away in this final picture from the first scenario and the other pictures from the Giant turned out too blurry to really use, but if the one picture doesn't give you the idea of some Slayers about to find their doom, I don't know what will.
Run Time: 1 Hour 08 Minutes 54 Seconds
----
Joe Fleschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06276648978267526802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7523193610737061535.post-12680302131230036262014-09-06T21:48:00.000-05:002014-09-11T21:40:01.904-05:00The In-BetweenJune 30th was my last post... Wow, time flies when you get busy, and flown it has. I haven't recorded an episode or made a blog post in over 60 days. I suppose some of that can't be helped. Having to pack up your home and move into a new house takes some time, even over a short distance such as the 15 or so miles we moved over the last 2 months. Then of course you have to do some painting, cleaning, building, fixing. Home ownership is as time consuming as our hobby. Hell it takes me two days now to get my lawn fully mowed.

However, I'm here to let everyone know that I'm still alive and kicking and the show will resume its recording schedule hopefully by the end of September. I haven't however been completely resting on my laurels though, and to prove it I've got pictures!

Let's start in from the beginning. Our last show was recorded towards the beginning of June. Since then quite a bit has happened actually. Towards the end of June some friends and I attended the Blood in the Sun tournament up in northern Illinois. We participated in both the Friday team event and the Weekend tournament. I took Dwarfs to the team and went 2-1 which is better than I'd been doing with the army since the new book came out. I then ran my Empire to a 3-2 record over the weekend. Along with that though came the bits trade on Saturday night. Always been a keen observer of great deals I found myself another this year. An entire Lizardmen Army for $50! What a steal!

The Carnosaur, Stegadon and newer Terradons were something I picked up later, but the 50 Sarus, 11 Cold Ones, Slaan, 28 Skinks, 12 Chameleons, 3 Terradons and Scar Vet on Cold One and Foot were the find. Pretty amazing deal since the Slaan is $50 on his own. I guess I know what army I'll be working on for the foreseeable future.

After returning from the tournament and packing up our home for most of July we made our move into our new home. Hopefully by the next time I move we'll be well off enough to afford to pay someone to do all for the heavy lifting for us. I'm not sure how much my poor back has left in it.

She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts kid. Like in the basement. Our new home came with a finished basement. Downstairs are two bedrooms and a family room. One of the bedrooms my wife let me convert a game room. Needless to say I was enthused.
Its kind of hard to get a real proper scale from pictures but the room is 24'x13' not counting the alcove where my computer and board game shelf are, which is some serious square footage. Also back behind the Warhammer table you can see a closet which is the full 13' across by 2-1/2' deep. Plenty of storage for my terrain, armies, etc... There is even an unfinished workshop space in the basement which is now my painting/modeling room. Heaven.
In August I took the Dwarfs to a local 3 round tournament at 3K and ran a 2-1 record with them pretty much convincing myself that while the new book is OK I'm still pretty unsatisfied with it. I wish GW would have changed a few things here and there but at least I'm not losing every game with them like I was when the book was first released. I seem to have found a groove.
Finally just in the last week or so the release of Nagash has come upon us! Holy cow, advancement of our story line. New rules, armies, magic lores. Really opens up the world to a lot of opportunities. I was even ready to drop a boatload of cash on an undead army. In fact I had one all lined up when much discussion amongst my friends convinced me to hold off. For one I had already decided on only owning 4 armies ever at a single time which I already have now with the Lizards. Secondly I currently have like 200+ modes in various stages of assembly/painting. I really needed to get my stuff together before I went looking into a new army. To that end I started pulling stuff out and the first thing on the painting table was this.
The Chapel piece had actually been done for quite sometime. Like last summer I believe. The Watchtower however needed to be finished and I just did so this evening. I'm still working on the brick fence that encloses the side area of the building but that shouldn't take very long at all and I expect to have it done tomorrow. Now about all that money I was going to drop on an army. Well, I couldn't just let it go to waste now could I?
No, no I couldn't. I was browsing e-bay when I ran across this big boy. $75! Well, $85 after shipping but that's nearly 1/2 off of Forge World prices. Pretty hard to pass up. I expect to receive him next week and it just so happens that Chuck is running a Storm of Magic tournament in Bloomington at the end of September. I get to use his actual rules! Woo hoo, excited!

Anyway, if you've spent this much time reading my post I appreciate it. I really just wanted to let you loyal followers, listeners, readers know that I wasn't dead but that I'm still here and I'm nearly ready to jump back in the recording saddle. Look for a new show to be out at the beginning of October. I imagine by then quite a bit will have changed in the Warhammer World. Lets hope its all for the better.
