Episode #65: The Next Big Waaagh!

Hey everyone,

I'm glad you're reading this post because I get to gladly announce that we're restarting the show although in a much more limited capacity than what you were previously used to.  The astout observor will have noticed that we've re-posted the iTunes button and Podcast RSS feeds on the website as well as have been re-listed on iTunes.  It gives me a lot of pleasure to kick the show back off, but in a completely different direction.  Instead of spioling it completely we'll let you listen to the show which should explain pretty much everything you'll either need or want to know about whats going on.

Adepticon 2013 - Wrap up

So I've already wrapped up all of the tournaments I played in over the weekend.  If you haven't read any of those posts you can catch up on them all here.

Adepticon: How You Use It - AM
Adepticon: How You Use It - PM
Adepticon: Team Tournament

Just wanted to wrap up and discuss the rest of my weekend.  While I've always volunteered to help clean up at the end of the convention for the last four years, this was the first year I was actually on Staff during the convention.  I was helping during both days of the Fantasy Championships and found it quite fulfilling.  I think that not only was it a nice way to finish the weekend out; but judging was far less exhausting than playing all day for two days is.  It was also a much more convenient way to socialize during the weekend as I was free to walk all over the Fantasy hall and talk to people.

I must admit that even though I'm used to running/judging smaller events I was rather worried about making rules calls in such a large tournament.  I didn't want to get a call wrong and end somebodies game; but I feel that every call I did make over the weekend was both justified and correct.  The few that I didn't feel 100% on were backed up by my fellow judges so that made me happy as well.

During the weekend the other tournament scores that I did participate in were posted so I'll drop a picture of those here.

Adepticon 2013 - Wrap up: Team Tournament

So here I am to wrap up the final tournament that I participated in 'on purpose'.  My friend Ryan and I got together and built a list with Ryan's Ogre Kingdoms and my own Bretonnia force.  The list was as below.

Bretonnia Contingent:
Paladin - General, Warhorse, Potion of Follhardiness, Virtue of Heroism
Paladin - BSB, Warhorse, Wyrmlance, Gromril Great Helm
8 Knights of the Realm - FC, Standard of Discipline
8 Knights of the Realm - FC, Banner of Eternal Flame
8 Knights of the Realm - FC, Banner of Chalons
3 Pegasus Knights - Musician
Field Trebuchet

Ogre Kingdoms Contingent:
Bruiser - General, Sword of Striking, Enchanted Shield, Dragonbane Gem, Rockeye
8 Ironguts - FC, Gleaming Pendant
3 Ogre Mournfang Cavalry - FC
2x1 Sabretusks
Ironblaster
4 Leadbelchers - Musician
We were pretty excited to be in this tournament, even with the raging hangover I had the morning of the tournament.  We went into it heads high and optimistic even though we ran with absolutely no magic.  Our team name was 'Guts Deep' which pretty much told you exactly how we were going to play it.  Push it forward!

Adepticon 2013 - Wrap up: 1k How You Use It: PM

So you've already had the opportunity to read my previous post about the AM 1,000 Point tournament at Adepticon 2013, but if you haven't follow this link to do so: 1,000 Point AM.  This post is about the afternoon PM 1,000 Point 'How You Use It' tournament.  The list I took nearly matched the Dwarf list from last year as well which consisted of:

Thane - Rune of Brotherhood, Master Rune of Challenge
Thane - BSB, Rune of Brotherhood, Master Rune of Gromril
10 Dwarf Warriors - Shield
37 Longbeards - FC, Shields, Rangers, Warbanner
7 Miners

Adepticon 2013 - Wrap up: 1k How You Use It: AM

So Adepticon 2013 has come and gone and with it many a fantastic game!  This will be the 1st of at least 3 different posts covering my time at the convention and the games I played and without too much filler lets get started.

I arrived on Thursday morning just in time to play in the AM 1,000 point 'How You Use It' tournament.  Feeling mostly lazy I played the same lists I did last year for the 1k's except switched which event they were in.  So for the AM I took a filthy Skaven list as below:

Greyseer - All Ruin
Chieftan - BSB
Engineer - Doomrocket
2x5 Giant Rats w/1 Packmaster Each
34 Slaves - Musician
33 Clanrats - FC
5 Gutter Runners - Poison, Slings
Hellpit Abomination - Warpstone Spikes

Blood in the Basement: Round 2, Turn 1

So we've run into another of the many grey areas provided in the book.  At least one rule we couldn't really find a hard and fast ruling for in the book to prevent issues from arising.  The guys noticed that there are a number of times in the book that you gain bonuses and negatives to specific units but due to the fact that the lists change constantly there really isn't a way for this to affect units in a perilous way.  Such as when you lose a game and get the ignominious Defeat where a unit from your army of your choice gains stupidity.  Well the next time you write a list to play with that army what’s to stop a person from simply building a list with 5 super cheap models like War hounds and giving them Stupidity to not adversely affect your primary units.  So we discussed setting our lists so that you can't do such things.  Then though we ran into the problems that there are also many things that change the lists such as if you gain the result from the Spoils of War table which lets you change your percentages of Special/Rare in your next game.

So, we've taken a vote on plans to fix these problems as well as altering a number of the rules.  In reality that’s all the campaign rules are; a set of guidelines to follow but alter to provide you and your group with a fun gaming experience.  So we've altered the rules.  We figured at the beginning of the Summer Season would be the best time to do so.  We've chosen to enact the following for our campaign.  We are setting lists for each character now.  So each of our 3 characters will have a set army accompanying them when they fight battles.  Also, all current bonuses of stats/traits and regiment of renown status will be lost.  The only things we'll be carrying over are Relics.  From here out the only way to alter your lists will be through the mines and Spoils of War tables.  Also at the beginning of each new season we may change our army lists so that we can try new units/combinations out.  We feel that this will keep the game more traceable and the players more accountable.  With that preamble out of the way let’s move on to our second season of the campaign, summer!

New Years Resolution Updates

Out of interest in talking about something other than Adepticon I figured now is a good time to check in on my New Years Resolutions that I made a few months ago.  Its interesting how many things we intend to start and even purchase materials for, but never quite get to.  I've basically copied the previous article so you can see what my goals I'd set were and then I'll comment on each one below it in red text so you can see where I'm at.

1. Finish painting my Warhammer Quest set.

Last year I made the final movement into getting the rest of the Warhammer Quest collection.  That isn't to say that I own every model you could possibly run into in the game, but I do own nearly every piece that was specifically made for Quest itself.  In fact last year I managed to completely finish painting the entire base set and now I'm left with Lair of the Orc Lord and Catacombs of Terror along with the rest of the independent characters.  I'd really like to finish this bad boy up and get some good foam for it from Battlefoam maybe, but let's just work on the painting right now.  This shouldn't be too bad.  I think total this is only about 20 models.  There will be no half points for this.  It either does or does not get done.
0/10pts
I have yet to even start this particular goal.  I've been far to busy with our campaign and Adepticon preparations.
